Prologue

Tuesday, February 3, 2004 10:34 p.m.

The bell chimed eight times across the countryside. A silence blanketed the darkened fields, empty of all life save those of unknown creatures.

In the manor of Lord Theodorus, there was no quiet. Servants darted back and forth down the torch lit hallways as the midwife yelled orders from the bedroom. More water, more wood, more blankets, there was never enough. They were silent, wringing their hands as they waited for more orders. Their lips pressed tight together in worry as they exchanged furtive glances at one another, listening to the agonized cries of Lady Loraine.

It had been five hours since she went into labour. It seemed as though it would never end. She was tired and had no strength to continue. She only did so because she knew that she would die and the baby would too.

"I see a head!" the midwife cried.

The servents gasped and gathered closer to the blood covered bed, whispering amongst themselves. Would the child be a boy or a girl?

The midwife pressed her lips together angrily and shouted, "Out! I cannot deliver the babe with all of you hovering around the Lady!" Another agonized cry from Lady Loraine sent the remaining servants scurring out the door.

It wasn't long. After two agonizing pushes and cries, the baby appeared in the midwife's arms, screaming and wailing at the top of her lungs. "A girl!" she cried and the servants in the hall began to filter back into the room.

Lady Loraine could not see the child as it was passed to a servant who had come in with a bucket of fresh water. The servant had just finished washing off the baby when Lady Loraine screamed again. The servant girl started in surprise and looked at the midwife. "Why is m'lady still in pain? I thought it stopped after the baby's born."

The midwife's face had gone white and for a moment, she stared at Lady Loraine in shock. It was only when the Lady moaned in pain again that she acted. "Quickly, put the babe in the cradle. Let no one enter this room."

Confused, the girl obeyed, gently laying the baby in its cradle and barring the door. When she looked back at her mistress, she saw the midwife talking quietly to her. Lady Loraine listened, her face going paler with every passing second.
